Taiwan Celebrates 30 Years of First Direct Presidential Elections With Star-Studded Lineup
This year marks the 30th anniversary of Taiwan’s first direct presidential election and the Taiwanese administration is marking the occasion through a special, star-studded concert celebrating democracy and freedom, according to the Office of the President of the Republic of China (Taiwan).
The most notable event is the “2026 Presidential Office Concert — Democratic Taiwan, Songs Warmed by the Southern Breeze” that was held on the evening of May 23 at the Pingtung County Gymnasium, in the south of the island.
The concert’s theme, “Democratic Taiwan, Songs Warmed by the Southern Breeze,” reflected on Taiwan’s democratic development while conveying to the world Taiwan’s determination to uphold democracy and freedom.
On May 22, the Presidential Office released a press statement noting that the concert, jointly organized by the Presidential Office and the General Association of Chinese Culture, will take place this Saturday from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Pingtung County Gymnasium. The event will also be livestreamed on platforms including the Presidential Office’s official website.
Taiwan’s committed to democratic freedom
The concert connected Taiwan’s democratic development through five thematic chapters and featured performers from different generations, languages, and ethnic groups. Through music, the organizers hope to reflect on Taiwan’s democratic journey and send a message to the world about Taiwan’s commitment to defending democratic freedom.

The Office of the President of the Republic of China (Taiwan) stated that in 1996, the people of Taiwan faced threats and intimidation without fear and, through the democratic principle of one person, one vote, peacefully elected their own president. This historic first direct presidential election marked Taiwan’s transition into a democratic nation before the eyes of the world and established the legitimacy, legality, and democratic foundation of the popularly elected president and government team.
Therefore, the Presidential Office explained that this year’s Presidential Office Concert revisited that historical journey. The event has been specially themed “Democratic Taiwan, Songs Warmed by the Southern Breeze,” and will connect the development of Taiwan’s democratic spirit through five major chapters: “Echoes of the Island,” “Freedom Blossoms,” “Leading with Confidence,” “Walking Together,” and “Watching Over Taiwan.” These themes aim to reconnect people with the land and the memories of their era, while portraying the cultural landscape and shared emotions unique to Taiwan.
Star-studded lineup
The Presidential Office further noted that this year’s concert featured a star-studded lineup spanning generations, languages, and ethnic groups. Performances will include Indigenous, Hakka, and new immigrant cultures, as well as Taiwanese-language classics, electronic music, rap, rock, and world music, collectively expressing Taiwan’s diverse voices.
To allow more people to participate in the musical celebration, the Pingtung County Government installed a large outdoor screen on the lawn in front of the gymnasium for simultaneous broadcasting. Around 40 market stalls and street performances were arranged along nearby Ren’ai Road, inviting the public to enjoy the performances and experience the charm of music together.
The Presidential Office added that the concert live broadcasted simultaneously on platforms including the Presidential Office’s official website, the Presidential Office YouTube channel, the General Association of Chinese Culture YouTube channel, China Television Company (CTS), TaiwanPlus, and Chunghwa Telecom MOD services. Taiwan’s Educational Radio Station also produced a special concert program from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. that evening, welcoming music lovers unable to attend in person to enjoy the performances together.
