Trump Calls for Immediate Ceasefire as Israel-Iran Conflict Escalates

Amid a continuing new round of military conflict between Israel and Iran, President Donald Trump said on June 8 that both sides are seeking an immediate ceasefire and are engaged in talks toward a final peace agreement. Iran later announced a suspension of military operations against Israel.

On Monday, June 8, President Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social regarding the latest exchange of fire between Israel and Iran: “Israel and Iran must immediately stop ‘shooting.’”

About an hour after that post, Trump wrote again that both Israel and Iran are seeking an immediate ceasefire. He added that final negotiations on “peace” are underway, but ignorant or foolish actions could still become an obstacle. Blockade measures will remain in place and fully effective until a “final agreement” is reached. He said things should move quickly and thanked everyone for their attention to the matter.

According to NPR, on Sunday, June 7, Iran fired missiles at northern Israel in response to Israeli airstrikes on Beirut, the capital of Lebanon. Israel then carried out retaliatory strikes against Iran, targeting military facilities in western and central Iran, as well as infrastructure such as the petrochemical industrial zone in Mahshahr in the southwest.

Iran suspends military operations

According to a statement from Iran’s central military command, Khatam al-Anbiya, cited by the semi-official Fars News Agency, Iran announced on Monday that it was suspending military operations against Israel.

The statement said Iran had already responded to Israeli military actions in southern Lebanon and the southern suburbs of Beirut (Dahiyeh), and warned that Israel and its supporters should learn from these events. It also threatened that if Israel continues military operations in areas such as southern Lebanon, Iran will respond with measures more severe than before.

It is worth noting that Fars News Agency is not an independent media outlet in the conventional sense. Sanctions documents from the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) list Fars News Agency as an entity “linked to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC),” explicitly noting its connection to the IRGC.

The outlet frequently publishes information reflecting the positions of the Iranian government and the Revolutionary Guard. In matters involving regional conflicts, nuclear programs, missile development, and relations with the United States and Israel, it often plays a role in domestic mobilization and external messaging. In addition, Fars News Agency has previously faced controversy for publishing unverified claims, exaggerated reporting, and inaccurate information. As a result, observers generally treat its military and diplomatic reporting with caution.
